BIRMAN COLOURS

The variety of colours now available in the Birman breed covers a wide spectrum, and there seems to be a colour for just about everyone. New Zealand has adopted the Birman breed like no other country in the world, we  have more Birmans per head of population than any country on earth!!

All Birmans have blue eyes, white feet and cream coloured coat. The major difference between colours is in the colour of their "Points" (Face, Ears, Legs & Tail).

There are a wide variety of recognised colours here in New Zealand, but here at Magwai Birmans we specialise in the following colours:

SEALPOINT
The most common coloured Birman is the Sealpoint. Their points are dark seal brown (like that of a fur seal) and they have a lovely golden coloured coat. Sealpoint's coats do tend to darken as they mature, especially in breeding cats.

BLUEPOINT

The Bluepoint is the second most common coloured Birman, and until the 1970's the breed was basically restricted to these two colours. Their point colour can range from a graphite grey through to a powdery pale grey. Their coat is glacial white, although shading can occur as they mature.

CHOCOLATEPOINT

Chocolate and Lilacpoints were developed in the 1970's by introducing these colours from Siamese, Balinese or Colourpoint Persians. There have been many generations of pure Birman matings since that time and they are now identical to their Seal & Blue counterparts with the exception of their colour. Chocolatepoint colour is a very light milk chocolate and has a decidedly redish hue to it. The difference between Chocolatepoints and Sealpoints can be thought of as the difference between milk chocolate and energy chocolate. Chocolatepoints have a pale ivory coat. They remain virtually free of shading as they mature.

LILACPOINT

Lilacpoints are the same dilution of colour from Bluepoints, as Chocolatepoints are from Sealpoints. Their point colour is a beautiful mushroom pink colour and only develops to its full colour as an adult cat. The coat remains almost perfectly white, with no shading of any kind.

SEAL TORTIEPOINT

Tortiepoints are always female and come in all of the above colours and display either two or three distinct colours on the points. Seal Tortiepoints have seal, red and cream spots and patches. Torties are a real "Pandoras Box" and depending on the colour of the stud used can have Seals, Blues, Reds, Creams, Seal and Blue torties.
